Beyond the Song by Carol Selick
“Beyond the Song” is an autobiographical novel, based on the author’s coming of age in the ‘sixties and early ‘seventies. A singer-songwriter like her alter-ego Carol Marks, Carol Selick begins each chapter with lyrics she wrote and still performs today.
There’s a lot of nostalgia for that time period. In many ways, my character’s search for her voice expresses the search of a whole generation of women. The settings in New York and Berkeley, are immediately recognizable. Drugs, sex, and rock ‘ roll provide a provocative landscape for Carol’s journey into womanhood.
Targeted Age Group:: YA and Adult
Heat/Violence Level: Heat Level 3 – PG-13
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Loosely based on the twists and turns of my life during the tumultuous 60s and 70s: protests, drug busts, road trips, dropping out of college, my book depicts what it was like as a young woman trying to find her way and make it in the music business. I wanted to portray this unique period in history and the confusion young women felt and about breaking boundaries as we went through the sexual revolution. We made it happen, but had a lot of guilt and conflict about asserting our rights. This is universal, and it's especially still important to young women today.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The main character, Carol Marks, is loosely based on my experiences as are the other characters in the book.
